Here's how to pick the perfect workout buddy!

May 7, 2019

If you’re struggling with motivation, or finding it hard to reach your goals, maybe you simply want to ramp up, or even switch up your workouts, then one of the smartest moves you can make is to get a workout buddy. Having a friend who is going to be there to support you throughout your highs and lows may just be the perfect push you need in order to stay on track with your fitness goals.

If you decide to get a workout buddy, keep in mind that the effort goes both ways, and you should be willing to step your game up and also be the best workout buddy you can be to that person. Here are a few tips to consider when choosing the perfect workout buddy!

Share similar goals

If your goal is to build muscle but they want to become a yoga expert, then there’s definitely a mismatch there. This difference in workout goals alone, will make it a bit harder to motivate each other as your training experiences would be quite different. It’s important to find a buddy with similar goals as this will help form a stronger bond between the two of you.

Workout Schedules

You might prefer early morning workouts while, the other person might prefer evenings. Sure you might try to find common ground and find time to train together, but one person will have to be in the gym at a time when they’d prefer not to be and this could create issues down the line. If your workout schedules don’t coincide, then it's more than likely that you two will not workout consistently as a team.

Workout Intensity

There are those that use their workouts largely for stress relief and socialization, while there are others with strict goals trying to achieve hardcore results. These two personalities will not mix as one person’s training approach will be more relaxed and the other will be more intense. The difference in intensity levels will affect each other’s goals and result outcome. Instead, choose individuals who aim to be around the same intensity level as yourself.

Skill Level

While this may not be a big deal to some, it's an important factor to consider. If you are much more experienced, you might find yourself spending a great deal of time simply explaining workout and fitness principles rather than actually working out. While, it's not a negative thing, it can be a struggle for those who have very limited exercise time in the gym or outdoors.

Positivity Vibes

Positive energy is an absolute must! - but so is responsibility. You want to avoid those that constantly make excuses for everything, always late and overly competitive. The company you keep can sometimes be the deciding factor between failure and success, this is why you owe it to yourself to be picky when choosing a workout buddy.

Good luck in your search,
